Surfing Injuries
Are Surfing Injuries Keeping You Out of the Water?
Is pain disrupting your joy of riding the waves, affecting your surf sessions, and hindering your overall enjoyment of an active lifestyle? If you're grappling with these challenges:
- You anticipated the discomfort to fade within days, but it persists.
- Home remedies like heating pads, ice, and TENS devices provided no lasting relief.
- Massages offered only temporary respite, with the pain returning shortly after.
- Medical consultations, injections, or prescribed medications provided only short-term relief.
- revious attempts at physical therapy didn't deliver the desired results.
- You've adjusted by avoiding certain movements to prevent aggravating the situation.
Our Goal Is to Get You Back on the Board.
Common Surfing-Related Issues We Address:
- Rotator Cuff Tears
- Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
- Labral Tears
- Wrist and Hand Injuries
- Knee Injuries
- Ankle Sprains
- Fractures
- Back Injuries
- Hip Injuries
- Achilles Tendinitis
- Neck and Spinal Injuries
- Foot Injuries
- Dislocations
- Concussions
Possible Root Causes:
- Reduced range of motion due to muscular weakness and imbalances, coupled with joint stiffness and muscle inflexibility leading to poor posture.
- Injuries occur when tissues experience rapid loading or impact.
- Fear of future injuries or past traumas may lead to the avoidance of specific muscle groups, while others are overused in a chronic compensating strategy.
How Kin Physical Therapy and Performance Approaches Treatment:
- Promoting proper posture for the lower body region.
- Relieving tension in muscles around the hips, knees, and ankles.
- Enhancing flexibility in lower body muscles.
- Utilizing manipulation, manual joint mobilization, and traction to improve joint movement.
- Strengthening muscles responsible for lower body movements more efficiently.
- Employing techniques like massage, instrument-assisted mobilization, and cupping to enhance tissue flexibility.
- Incorporating targeted nerve exercises to minimize sensitivity (reducing numbness, tingling, and leg pain).
- Developing functional exercises involving activities like walking, squatting, lunging, and jumping.
Key Considerations:
- Tissues possess the ability to recover, but sometimes the body's natural healing process needs external assistance to transition into full recovery.
- Results from MRI and X-ray scans may not always correlate with the actual source of pain. Imaging may reveal tissue damage even without pain or functional limitations, and pain may persist without significant findings due to heightened sensitivity in nervous tissues.
- Post-exercise soreness is a natural response, indicating minor tissue damage. Genuine strength improvements require subjecting the body to overload. The level of soreness helps gauge tissue readiness for increased stress; if not ready, training intensity should be scaled back until adequately prepared.

What People Say About KIN PT and Performance
Steve exhibits both skill and care in his practice. I was introduced to Steve through a mutual friend after my ankle injury, and he jumped on a call with me to learn about not just my injury, but also my hobbies and routines so that I can back to a healthy state to resume them, through physical therapy.
In my first session, Steve diagnosed my ankle by pressing and turning it in different directions to figure out the exact movements that were limiting/ causing pain. He proceeded to show me exercises and explained the reasoning behind them.
I recommend working with Steve to anyone who is considering physical therapy.

I came to Steve with a host of problems: DIP synovitis, left low-back pain, right RC pain, and neck pain. I found his approach helpful for a few reasons: his experience climbing and working with climbers (you may see him at the gym!), his coupled approach to the body (not treating each issue as separate), and his propensity to focus on functional compound movements, which work on getting me back to movements (as opposed to getting better at a PT movement).
My work with Steve has been great success. Over the past 5 years I've seen 3 different PTs and have only seen mild/temporary improvement of symptoms. In the 2.5 months with Steve, we have been able to address my goals of running, pushing myself while climbing and lifting, and sitting on the ground. There's still work to be had, but you know a PT is successful when you haven't thought about limiting yourself in the gym or you haven't thought about the nagging back/neck pain in a month. I truly feel like we're working together and are getting to the root of my physical ailments

I worked with Steve to rehab a climbing related TFCC injury and couldn't recommend his expertise enough! Steve was patient, thorough, and supportive while guiding me through my recovery.
Upfront, he communicated clearly about the cause of my injury, and what to expect during the recovery. He took time to listen to my goals and concerns, and made sure to tailor the recovery plan to them. The personalized program also proved to be very effective. Following the plan, I was able to see improvement right away. A few weeks later, I'm back on the wall with no pain! Being a climber himself, Steve also gave me great climbing advice and insights on injury prevention in the long run. Now I feel more confident in achieving my fitness goals thanks to Steve. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and outcome!
